Since Brea can be translated as “tar” in Spanish it’s no surprise that it has a rich history in oil production. The Olinda Oil Museum and park is a great place to learn about this history. The park features the original Olinda Oil Well Number One, a once used field office, a jackline pump, a records vault, museum as well as new public restroom. The museum includes some great early photos, fossils found on the property and a back room with a number of oil related historic pieces. I highly recommend engaging with one of the docents as they are full of great context.
The park is open daily from 9am – 4pm with the museum open on Sunday from 12-4pm.
